MCDUFFIE COUNTY IS SEEKING A DIRECTOR FOR ITS PARKS AND RECREATON DEPARTMENT


Position Overview

McDuffie County seeks a Recreation Director to lead its athletic programs, provide leadership to staff and users, manage its facilities, and foster a community service oriented department under the direction of the County Manager.


Key Responsibilities

  • Department Leadership: Directs the daily operations of Parks and Recreation, including programs, parks, facilities, community centers, and staff.
  • Budget & Administration: Develops and manages the departmental budget; monitors revenues and expenditures and oversees purchasing, and efficient use of County resources.
  • Programs & Events: Plans and oversees year-round recreation programs, athletics, tournaments, and special events and coordinates activities with schools, community organizations, athletic associations, and other partners.
  • Staff Management: Supervises, trains, motivates, and evaluates employees; establishes work priorities and ensures departmental activities comply with County policies and procedures.
  • Facilities & Capital Projects: Develops short- and long-range facility and capital improvement plans and oversees renovations, construction projects, equipment needs, and park improvements.
  • Community & Intergovernmental Relations: Serves as a primary contact for citizens and community organizations; promotes programs and maintains effective relationships with County departments, public agencies, community partners, and recreation organizations.

About the Position: 

The ideal candidate will be professional and well versed in many facets of youth and adult recreation as well as park maintenance and management.  The new director will be instrumental in promoting the county, promoting sportsmanship, providing exemplary leadership, community investment, and be a driving force for growing and maintaining our recreation programs.  


Required Knowledge & Skills

  • Comprehensive knowledge of modern parks and recreation programs, facilities, equipment, operations, and community recreation needs.
  • Knowledge of public facility and park maintenance, construction, renovation, and capital improvement practices.
  • Strong leadership, organizational, supervisory, and administrative skills with the ability to plan and manage a comprehensive parks and recreation program.
  • Ability to analyze reports, budgets, operational information, and program needs to support effective planning and decision-making.
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills with the ability to build effective relationships with employees, citizens, community organizations, public agencies, and other stakeholders.
  • Ability to operate and understand equipment associated with parks and facility operations.
  • CPR and First Aid Certification required.


Education & Experience

Bachelor’s degree in a related field required. Minimum five years of relevant experience in parks and recreation management. Must be or be able to be certified by NRPA as Certified Parks and Recreation Professional.  Other certifications may be required. 


Working Conditions

This position will be both office- and outdoor-based.  Hours will vary depending upon sporting season, games, and travel to tournaments. Evening and weekend commitments are required. Attendance at conventions and other recruiting events as required.

Compensation & Benefits

This position will begin at $75,000 and increase with experience, education, professional licenses, and certifications. McDuffie County offers paid time off,  health care with vision and dental plans,  life insurance, retirement plan, and YMCA membership.
